Shana Neuhauser, Social Worker

Trauma Therapist in Long Island, New York

Speciality in anxiety, trauma, & process addictions.

Hi! I’m Shana, and I am a social worker and therapist practicing in Cedarhurst, New York and virtually.

I support individuals who have trauma histories, substance use and process addictions, and other mental health concerns. I integrate a variety of modalities including parts work, experiential therapy, psychodrama, and DBT. I hold space for clients as they embark on the journey towards healing from their past and creating a more satisfying and meaningful life. I believe that we all have the inner resources to solve our own problems and find joy, but we need support and guidance in doing so. I am there by your side, empathetically walking through the journey with you and giving you tools along the way.

Somatic Therapy for Trauma Healing in Long Island

I work with clients who are facing painful inner struggles relating to worthiness, self-defeating patterns, relationships, shame, and more. The common thread between these inner struggles is that they come from a place deep inside of us that has been wounded, often a scared inner child who did not get the support they needed. Talk therapy cannot reach these deep parts by itself, so I use a combination of different experiential modalities to facilitate healing through a bottom-up approach.

Our bodies hold onto traumatic experiences in the form of physical symptoms, sensory flashbacks, emotional reactions, and automatic responses.

Initially our bodies do this to protect us, but over time we become so disconnected from our bodies that it ends up being extremely harmful. My goal is to help clients to re-inhabit their bodies and feel more present. Feeling at home in your body is your human birthright.

I have a special place in my heart for group therapy! Healing happens in community, and group therapy can be a transformative experience as you connect to others who understand you and accept you as you are. I believe that everyone can heal from trauma and mental health struggles and live a happy and joyous life, and I will hold on to that hope for you until you can internalize it for yourself.

When you’re in session with me...

We will work together to create the path towards inner freedom from trauma, addiction, anxiety, & depression, and I will walk alongside you every step of the way.

Healing takes place through connection to others, and building a healthy attachment in the therapeutic relationship is an important part of that. I value giving my clients a warm and welcoming place to land. I invite moments of laughter and connection in addition to the moments of vulnerability and seriousness.

I like to get creative in sessions and use different treatment approaches and interventions that fit your individual needs.

Each client has a unique set of life circumstances, strengths, challenges, and interests, so therapy with me is extremely personalized. We will find the right combination of modalities to help us address your struggles and challenge unhelpful core beliefs.

Trauma is held in the body, so it must be healed in the body as well.

I use a variety of experiential approaches to help you heal the somatic imprint that trauma has left. When it comes to trauma, talk therapy is not enough on its own.

All feelings are welcome, and we will sit with sadness, fear, grief, shame, and other difficult emotions and welcome them. Together, we will work through your pain and dig deep to discover who you are beneath the trauma. As we work through your struggles on an emotional, physical, and spiritual level, therapy will help you get back in touch with your authentic self.

What is Trauma Therapy in New York?

Trauma therapy can be tough, so an important part of our work will be learning coping skills and grounding techniques to use inside and outside of sessions. With time, you will start to realize that you have the tools to cope with difficult situations outside of the therapy room.

After some time in therapy, you will start to feel more connected to yourself and others, more present in your daily life, and more empowered in the face of life’s challenges.

Somatic Therapy - a way to find relief from the tension trapped in your body.
